Unbroken - New Exhibition at Eagle Gallery

I am preparing to open my new exhibition, Unbroken, at The Eagle Gallery, Bedford, from 6–13 September 2025. This body of work has grown out of my fascination with resilience, how it manifests in flesh, memory, and spirit. For me, painting is a way of holding that tension between fragility and strength, between what endures and what dissolves.
The figures I paint are not untouched or idealised. They carry weight, they carry scars, they carry history. Some of them are cultural icons we all recognise; others are anonymous faces or even fragments of myself. But what they share is presence. They refuse to disappear. They remain.
One of the central works in the exhibition is Don’t Let the Bastards Grind You Down. She is not a victim, nor is she fragile. She is a figure who has fought and prevailed. Against all odds, she still stands. I painted her as a declaration of resilience, wings not as decoration, but as symbols of survival. Like a phoenix rising from ashes, she embodies both struggle and triumph.
When I work, I often resist the urge to “finish” in a conventional sense. My brushstrokes blur at the edges, wings dissolve into background, flesh absorbs the colours of its surroundings. This unfinished quality is not a lack of control, it is a deliberate choice. For me, resilience is not smooth or polished. It is fractured, imperfect, and at times unresolved, but still unbroken.
I hope that when you see this exhibition, you will encounter something of your own story within these works. Perhaps in the defiance of the angel, in the intimacy of a portrait, or in the way colour itself holds both tension and release.
